I may be a little bias here since I work for a school. And they change our shift during the summer when I like it to stay the same all year long. But yes I think school should be all year long for the kids with longer breaks in between. But I don't think that will ever happen. School was originally let out in the summer so the kids could help plant the crops and harvest them to.

Yes the kids forget too much over the summer and several weeks are nothing but review from the school year before. And they expect the kids ot know so much now it is hard to cram all of that into the current school year. Also school is supposed to prepare you for life and entering the workforce. Not alot of Jobs get a whole summer off to play. Kind of like you get tardies at school when you are late in prepartion for what is going to happen to you when you are late for work. I can see where in todays society of broken families where it may cause complications there but I do think that overall year long school with several short breaks would be more benifical even if the kids dont like the idea. lol

No. Summer provides an opportunity for long term or intense projects that cannot be accomplished during the school year. Some families like to travel. Sometimes students choose to have elective surgery during the summer break and require several weeks to recover. For students who need remedial instruction, this is also a good time to get the extra tutoring and studying they need to catch up with peers. Operating schools all year around is a very expensive proposition.

Schools in Europe are based on this principle. The idea has a lot of pluses. Knowledge is not lost over the summer so time doesn't have to wasted reteaching and everyone gets short breaks all during the year.

In one place I lived growing up, I went to a private school that had a traditional schedule, but the public school district ran all year. They did 9 weeks on, and 3 weeks off. It was an interesting model.

Yes, I do. One of my cousins did go to all year school and she loved it. Her family could take cheaper vacations at non-peak times and got to do fun things like go to New England and see the fall trees. Plus, she said that she had all her health appointments during the breaks. I know it cuts into summer sports, but they could still be done because my cousin had about 8 weeks off during summer.

No, I've been in school...I can personally attest to the idea that after about Memorial Day or so, it's downright impossible to get kids to pay attention to what's going on in class. Their minds are on the warm weather outside and what they could be doing in it. Up until Labor Day (especially in Iowa, thanks to our State Fair ^__^ ), it's the same story going back to school.
I don't mind the idea of kids spending a little longer in school every day, though, or even maybe a couple hors on Saturday mornings. They could use it.

I think all school age children ought to be forced into hard labor in cruel and unusual military boarding schools for the next 19 years until they understand that it's all about the "parents," not the children...
(just kidding...I love those cute little brats...I had it easy in the public school system of Northern California...with all the teacher strikes, we pretty much went to school whenever we wanted...LOL...)

I think we should have work/school for three months of the year & then get the rest off. What's this with making vacation the shortest time of our lives?
