Besides wanting to be President, they have to assess the possibility of winning elections. If their advisers tell them their prospects are not good, why waste the time and money?

I have heard 3 interviews with Fred Thompson and he most certainly wants the job of president. First, it takes time to get a campaign together. Things have started earlier than usual for this election. In the past, people would not have paid as close attention to the candidates a year and a half before an election. Secondly, it is the summer. The summer is the slowest time in politics and in Washington D.C. When you announce your candidacy, you want to get attention (this goes for Repubs and Dems equally), so the summer is not a smart time to enter a presidential race.

Fred is playing hard to get. Once you announce, you have limits on the amount of money you can receive and how much a specific person or group can give, so he's getting everything he can now-while those that have already announced, are not only limited, but are spending. He'll be sitting on top of a pile, with another pile rolling in. It's really a very smart plan.
As far as Newt. I think he would make a fine president, however, there are some shady dealings in his personal life from his past that may prohibit him.

It's sort of a legal issue I suppose. Why start early in a race if you don't HAVE to. I haven't heard much of what Thompson would do as president but I have heard enough of what I need from Newt. Too bad the Dems have what the have running, I wish they gave the GOP some competition. All I hear from them is Bush this and Bush that. Come up with some solutions and agendas people!

Indecision, now there is someone we want running the country. NOT. One thing I'll say for Dubya, at least he makes decisions, albeit wrong ones most of the time, he can decide. Thompson and Gingrich can't.

No, they should have thrown their hat in the ring by now. The real problem is that Fred can't raise any money, and Newt knows that he doesn't have a snowballs chance of winning.
It's not that they don't want to become President, it's that they are afraid of losing badly.

Forget both of them. What joke though, one or both of those two end up better in the polls than some who ARE actually running.

Sorta sad these are the Republican choices to succeed their "Decider", isn't it?
I can see Frankenberry Thompson saying "Maybe" to EVERY question asked of him as a would-be President. But HEY Repubs, go ahead and nominate him so the Dems can make History next year.
