Something needs to be done about Illegal immigration and securing our borders?

I know there are a lot out there that are for illegals, but I honestly think I see more people from both sides of the aisle agreeing on this.... Do you agree?

Obviously I think so and I think this is one of the biggest problems we face today. It effects so much of our society. It is a national security issue, it puts a drain on our schools, hospitals, police force, job market, economy and so on. With everyone's voice in unity on this one I think things can be done. We are already seeing the effects in Washington. Can we be united on this front?

g - while I agree we should fine companies for using illegals this won't make the problem or the issues go away.

We give so much in social programs that they don't actually have to work to have a better life here.

And as for a security threat to the nation. Someone entering with a dirty bomb is not looking for a job.

Yes... spend billions if we have to to build a secure border.

Halestrm, I agree with you. I don't hire illegals at home or work. I don't care how cheap or qualified they are. I will not support criminals knowingly.

sb... look at my last question... illegals are responsible for more American deaths since 911 than the Afghan and Iraq wars combined.

I agree with you. I live in AZ, and the burden is huge. I know it is an issue in ever state. What is amazing is people think this is about Mexico, but I feel the same way about the Brits, Aussies, Sweds, Canadians, etc. I believe we have the laws on the books to fight this. We said we were building a fence, were is it? Why aren't we cracking down on the employers?

RE: this is about cheap labor. When I hired our yard maint. people, I confirmed that everyone was here legally. The owner was shocked, he said he had never been asked to prove that before. My explaination? I do not mind supporting a man who came her legally and is working to learn English, but I refuse to fund someone who came here illegally. (PS, before I am attacked, I hired the company for 10 years worth of experience, they were priced in the middle of everyone I interviewed.)

Oh absolutely. It is also causing a serious crisis of eroding our culture and patriotism. Even the HONEST people (leaving out the drug dealers and criminal element) that just want to be able to make an honest days wages, come up and much like muslims and eastern populations, ARENT integrating into American life and keeping a separate identity, customs, and communities. This is going to lead to a multicultural nation that lacks basic nationalism (pride in your nation) and patriotism. Im very proud of my german roots but that isnt who I am. My ancestors moved to America and we formed a separate culture from Europe with our own traditions and customs and Im proud of the American way and life in general.

sbcalif>We dont need a 9/11 style attack to get us focused on the problem. And wouldnt you agree that even if your nation is at war that there ARE other things going on worthy of note? Or are you in the habit of obsessing about military action? You are downplaying or are ignorant of the many detrimental effects that illegal immigration has on our country. Security and health care are only a part of it. If more comprehensive and smart policies arent made in the way of trade and immigration law, things are going to get worse and we just may have another 9/11 style attack. Then would you start paying attention?

No I do not agree that it as big of a priority as many people here seem to.
With all this rhetoric about it, you've got to wonder why it became such a big issue. I have seen no event, no huge spike in immigration, no bombing of the border that has made it warrant this much attention. It seems to be about the same as it has been since the mid to late eighties when Mexico revalued its peso.

I see this as a distraction from things that are actually unfolding like the Iraq War and Katrina.

You are right illegal immigration does effect many aspects of our society. But I find the deaths of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis from a War we started to be more moving and worthy of my attention.

And you are wrong about receiving "so much assistance from the government they don't need to work hard" - clearly you don't know any illegals. There are an estimated 8-12 million illegals here, there are about 40 million uninsured Americans, and they use the healthcare system in pretty much the same exact way. So if we fixed the problem of uninsured Americans we would make a much more positive impact on our healthcare system than if we focused on illegals. We should find a way to integrate the labor that we clearly need. Also it would help if some of our foreign policies did not ultimately encourage such immigration.

We need to stop the daily increase NOW by securing our borders. We need to deport every suspect of a crime that is apprehended NOW including those we have incarcerated for any reason. We apprehend a criminal and then allow him to use our justice system at our cost. We need to enforce our current laws NOW. In my mind dealing with this problems is a part of the war on terror. Of 15000 contacts with suspected illegals in our state ICE only actively pursued 350 some. If they are so inefficient and undermanned they need to be beefed up. Any government agent injuring a suspected illegal should be honored, not prosecuted. I have proposed a four part solution to non violent illegals currently here.
1. Put them in the army for a 3 year term and ship them to overseas as combatants. I would only give them on the job training. I would allow them to enter the legal immigrant line at the back end as a reward for their service
2 The ones that refuse the first option should be shipped overseas for 6 years to work at repairing infrastructure in Iraq, various African countries, and other war torn or naturally ravaged areas. It would be the responsiblity of the receiving country to house and feed them. Any pay would be that countries option.
3. If they refuse both of the above put them to work buillding our security fence. They should be housed in Maricopa county style tent jails. Any attempted escapees (to the north) should be apprehended, embedded with a permanent chip and returned to their country of origin. If they returned they should suffer an immediate death sentence without the benefit of our court system.
4. Refusal of the first three options should result in a permanent chip and returned to their country of origin under the same conditions as above.

We need to bill the country of origin for any costs incurred.
Payment in oil, refined petroleum products, or critical materials should be accepted. based on our price structure.

The borders don't need any more securing, what is needed
is a royal crackdown on the aiding and abetting by our
fellow Americans. Then there would be no reason for
illegals. Cure the problem at it's source (in short follow
the money)

We need to enforce our current immigration laws NOW, illegal
immigration costs the US $338 billion per year, the cost to deport all of them is about $320 billion so we would save $18 billion in the first year. this seems to me to make good fiscal sense to deport them.

Not only would we save $18 billion on social costs, we would substantially lower the prison population.

Our other current need is a ratification of the 14th amendment to the constitution and eliminate the anchor baby law, this amendment was never intended to allow illegal acts to produce any sort of legal status. No othe country in the world allows this.

No, the actual plan in government is to get RID of our borders, both Mexian and Canadian, and make the North American Union. That's what NAFTA and its kin are all about.

I think the people believe this way, but the politicians are not with the people on this one (anti-illegal immigration)!

something... yes...

but national priorities and spending on projects would be greatly debated...

for example... I don't think we should spend billions to fix it...

all we would really need to do is pass very sharp fines on businesses hiring illegals... so it wouldn't be worth their while...

no jobs... no illegals...

All people agree except for the rich, who benefit from keeping labor cheap, and it is that rich 1% who run the country. Now, who is familiar with the French Revolution?
