In my opinion, laptops are better than desktops because they're portable and convenient, but if you don't need a portable computer, then a desktop computer is for you.

It took me half an hour to balance the desktop on my knees and get comfortable. Even then I had to use one hand to steady the monitor. Then would you believe it but the train didn't have a mains outlet. To add insult to injury I ended up with deadlegs at the end of my trip!
Next time I took a laptop. It wasn't quite as powerful. The screen wasn't quite as good. I will admit that it did keep my legs warm. And it cost me an Armenian Lek by comparison.
And when things get really bad at home with the kids playing WOW. I just pick up the laptop move into the bathroom and sit on the throne browsing through Yahoo Answers.

Desktop computers are always better for the same price. The reason being is you pay for the making things small and having to deal with the same amount of heat in a smaller space. This being said if you need to be mobile then there is nothing better than a laptop.
Note hard drives are faster in desktops.
Memory is cheaper.
Processors are faster more heat dissipation.
More places to add cards for add on's don't have to go PCMCIA or USB with external power.

Laptops only advantage is mobility and are really meant for office work only. Desktops can be built cheaply to suit a office worker or for a good chunk of money have a power house gaming machine or for simulation programs. My personal opinion go with a desktop because:
1rst - They are easily modified
2nd - They have a lot more capability
3rd - Cheaper to repair

I got my laptop last year and it's much more convenient than a desktop because I can use it anywhere. For example, when I visit family members on vacation, I can take my laptop along. Also, I can use it in different rooms of the house, depending on the time of day.

Laptops are great if you have a lot to do while travelling. I had one my last year of college because I was juggling 2 jobs, a child, a husband, and 18 hours of school.
In GENERAL desktops are going to offer you more power, more for your money, more memory, etc.
If you have a choice, go with a desktop. It will last you longer AND be less prone to breaking.

They are good for traveling, but aren't always as powerful as desktops. Why do you think people buy desktops if laptops are better?

it depends...
Labtops are good if you travel and are light weight..
Desktops are good for like offices and i think desktops are better for games(but thats my opinion) i guess it just matters on what your interested in..
I think labtops r easier to break parts on..Like i had a dell inspiron 1150 or something like that and the charger got pushed in and damaged and it won't charge and the guy i took it to tried putting it back on the place and it still didn't work so now the charger on it doesn't work so i have to go buy an external battery charger and that means once it dies i have to take it out to charge it again.
