Official term for Mafia in Japanese is Bouryoku dan.
Bouryoku dan is the name of organization and the member is as called as Bouryoku dan in. Normally, Bouryoku dan in is a Yakuza, which is informal expression. That is why, for instance in the news program on TV, the anchor usually call them as not Yakuza but Bouryoku dan.
In this connection, Bouryoku means violence, and dan means a organization. In means a member.

This is a stock knowledge from my Asian History Nippon- Land of the Rising Sun They call themseleves Nippons because they live in Japan and they speak Nipongo. I think in their own languagem nippon means Japanese. In English we named a group of people by their countries. Like England- English, India-India, China-Chinese, Taiwan-Taiwanese..same with Japan-Japanese..we cant call them Nipponese or Niponggose...
