Choices include burying him in a friend or family members yard, group cremation (no ashes returned) or private cremation. Usually if you take the pet to the crematory yourself you will save a lot of money. It may only cost about $50.00 compared to over $100.00 if the vet handles the remains. I hope your kitty hangs in there for awhile! :)

I can relate to you as my cat, Whiskey, is 23-1/2 years old. She will be 24 on Valentine's Day in 2008. Recently, I was ready to put her to sleep as I thought she wouldn't make it much longer, but that old lady surprised me as well as the vet. She is again going strong.
To answer your question, cremation is probably your best bet. As to the cost, check with your vet -- they are usually the best source of information on cremation for your friend. I have cremated pets, buried them in the ground and buried them at sea. When they are cremated, you can still keep them near. I'm going to find an attractive urn and put her picture beside it on the shelf.

I cremated my poodle for about $75.
She died at home so I called a local vet to get the number of the company they used.
If you have your animal put to sleep the vet includes the cremation cost with everything and will make the arrangements for you.

I'm going to have my rats either cremated or mummified. My significant other is finishing up his BFA, so I'll have him make me a nice container to put them in. I just can't stand the thought of my beloved pets being away from me or in the ground.
You might bury them in a park or place you visit a lot since you're in an apartment.

If she dies at the vets they will take care of her body, otherwiseyou could bury her in your parents garden,or a close relitive. In the meantime get some good photos of her so you can do what I did when I lost my horse to colic.Set up a little corner with photos, a little candle, flowers. It's sad that they grow old.

Most vets offer a cremation service.
I think it's around £15 for a cat.

Sadly, we have had to euthanize two of our family dogs already. One was a mixed-breed female dog named Nina who had cancer of her mammary glands and was in great pain and suffering; it was the only humane thing we could do for her. The other was a healthy, young male Pit Bull terrier named Tyson; we had to move out of our rented apartment, and no landlord was willing to rent to us if we had a Pit Bull dog. In both instances, the veterinarian gave us a choice of keeping the corpse and arrange for its disposal {for a $100 fee}, or we could take the body and bury it at a place of our choice. In both cases, we took the bodies and buried them under a big tree in a family friend's farm. In animal shelters, animals that aren't adopted in a brief period of time are euthanized and their bodies disposed of by cremation.
I keep online memorials for both Nina and Tyson; you can look them up at the following links:

As for the cost of animal cremation, my friend's dog Romeo was hit by a car whose driver didn't stop and have never been identified. Despite extensive surgery and blood transfusions, the vet recommended that Romeo be put to sleep. Because of the extent and severity of the lesions he sustained, he would spend the rest of his life in great suffering and pain, and letting him go was the most humane thing to do. My friend and his wife had owned Romeo since he was a puppy; they had been unable to have kids, and they treated Romeo as their child. They wanted to have Romeo cremated, and even held a memorial service for him. The total cost of the cremation [not including the special urn they bought for his ashes] was $ 300.00.

If the cat gets very ill, not eating, and cannot walk, I would bring it to a vet and they will put it to sleep very humanly. Then they will dispose of the cats remains if you agree.
