Okay no I do not want to kill myself!!! I'm writing a fiction story about a girl who attempts suicide and I need to know about how many pills it would take to hurt somone not kill them because then I'd have no story but enough to where they need to be hospitalized and be treated and all that crap. I'm doing this story for school so I need logical answers please.

If you're just writing a story, just say something like she just kept putting in the pills, again and again till she passes out and have her wake up at the hospital. The doctor can say something vague like "A couple more and you would've been a goner," or another along those lines.

Now a days, non prescription pills are designed to keep you from killing yourself via over dosing. (The modern sleeping pill now has about half the potency they did in years past...) I would say in 1957 you'd need 50 pills to do some damage... damage to the kidneys and liver. But, in 2007 you need atleast a 100, and lots of alcohol to boot.
The body is incredibly resilient and this taking of pills probably wouldn't do the trick in one pop... The brain will fight hard to stay alive. If your body knows you are trying to kill it, it will do all it can to keep that from happening. You'd need to keep taking a bunch of pills for probably an hour or more to actually kill yourself.

Say a handful, that would sound dramatic in your story
People who take pills for suicide are not trying to kill themselves,they want attention. If someone really wants to kill their self, the put a .45 in the mouth and pull the trigger.

Be careful what your fiction story says, don't be to specific. Readers imitate fiction sometimes. Me I would find the memoir "Girl Interupted" and read her description of a drug overdose that got her hospitalized at McClain ( ? ). Do a version of that as a point of departure.
Just make sure it doesn't upset Lisa ( Angelena Jolie portrayed Lisa )

depends on how fast the body absorbs the pills, you're weight, dosage, etc
