live in a society that motivates the sick and homeless to commit crimes just so they get room and board and free health care. As it seems that life in prison is more inviting?

I guess you don't know about the other perks they get as well. Not only do they get free health care, they get better health care than the law abiding. Doctors want that better pay and the best way to get paid your worth is from the government.
Also, they get free college education, better than what you and I receive because again it is a guaranteed check from the gov., they don't have to wait like they do for the students on a legal campus. The average prisoner takes up none other than legal classes, the majority do have their degrees, and I assure you, they know more about the law than the guards do, since they know their rights, a guard can get into serious trouble if they touch them, look at them, or speak about them in a certain way, they have been sued!
The food is riggerously tested before given to prisioners, you sure can't say that about a Happy Meal going to your children. They get the better tootpaste, toiletries, everything, because companies love that gov. contract and aren't about to lose that good money for their goods.
Lastly, their matresses are flame retardant, no one else in the country has a flame retardant matress unless they bought it illegally through a prison somehow. Plus non-toxic fumes, while ours are highly toxic if burnt.

Now, what were you saying?

Being institutionalized is important to some people (prison, military, merchant marine). I sailed on several tallships in the '90s where runaways and homeless sail just to have a roof over their heads - they're known as 'schooner bums'.

But being sent to jail is not housing people, you need to go and visit some homeless shelters and 'drop-in centers' to really see criminals, sex offenders, homosexual drifters, and illegal immigrants get Section 8 housing and free medical care all at taxpayers expense without using a correctional facility as a 'de facto' hotel.

Investigate you local homeless shelters an 'drop-in centers', found at most Churches, and see for yourself.

i think that can sometimes happen, criminals and those declared mentally ill and sent to hospitals, do receive free health care, along with a place to live, most always heat and air-conditioning, often a gym or exercise equiptment, and cable tv

at the same time, its a sad state to be in, when you would be willing to give up your freedom, and see confinement as the only way to acheive the basics in life
yes, we should do more, spend more, to help our citizens, all our citizens, and atleast spend as much on welfare as we do on war
ps: i mention the mental hospitals, due to the fact i have someone i know who is going threw hard times, and is considering doing that, his son recently did that, said he was having suicidal thoughts, went to the hospital for a week, in fact he has done it twice in the last month, their power is turned off, and yes its very hot here, but its sad they can find no other help, so their case is to cool off, but your point about health care is also an issue

Prisoners get "free" medical care simply because their conditions of confinement do not permit them to earn money to pay for medical care. If we denied prisoners medical care unless they paid for it, people would be comparing our human rights situation unfavorably to Iran, Libya, etc.

heck, anyone can go to the ER and get treated and not pay ... welfare definitely encourages unwed mothers to pop out babies and teach them to find a way to live off welfare, themselves ... it's the socialism seeping in and it sux ... and, yes, perks make certain aspects of prison inviting if you were raised to survive emotionally if you went there ... though most people aren't happy to give up their freedom - they just act like they don't care to seem tough, IMHO ...
