What an interesting question. You are quite right of course about the syllables. The only thing I can think of is that if a person was giving a web address to someone to write down who was not computer literate e.g over the phone to a relative at home, they would need to tell them it exactly as it needs to be written down. Other than that it's a puzzle.
p.s. I have just read the other answers and would like to make the following points:.
A lot of people did not read your question correctly ,you did use the word "say"
I do not agree with them I have used www in speech and heard it frequently.
I think it may be a difference between Nations. I have never heard anyone say dubyadubya dubya. And please before anyone thumbs me down I am not insulting the USA just pointing out that they do pronounce some words differently to us Brits and that has obviously spilled over in to technology !

When the World Wide Web was first introduced, it was the thing to say it completely, but, it has been around now what seems like forever and everybody knows what it means. So, there is no need to say nothing other than WWW.

Because we type it as www. So we say what we type.
I'm not going to tell you to visit "world-wide web dot yahoo dot com" for two reasons: 1) It would take too long to say, and 2) You'd probably type in the words "world-wide web" if I included it as a part of the name of the website, which you don't have to do. You just have to type www.
There aren't really any other situations in which the phrase is used. I'm not going to say go check the "www," but I'm also not likely to say you should check the "world-wide web." Go on the internet or online, or google it, or try wikipedia, etc.

because usually when saying it I am talking to people who have no idea what the world wide web is....so it is easier to just tell them to type the WWW rather than say the world wide web.
anymore though I don't even have to say all that considering that the computer will do all that for them so long as there is a .com or .org or .net or .gov at the end.

The only time I saw www is to tell someone to go to an address. If I told my parents to go to the world wide web.yahoo.com they would type world wide web not www. hmmm.. good point though.

I don't think that we do that. Surely we just talk about "the Web".
That is pretty short and snappy.
Haven't heard anyone saying WWW or even Workd Wide Web; only "the Web". Two syllables
LoL

Who says "www" ? If I get asked for a web address I don't mention the W's at all. I'd just say yahoo.co.uk and I assume people know the w's are there. So my syllable count is 0 !

(U.S.) I don't know anyone who SAYS www except on the rare occasion of spelling out an url. And the whole reason you spell out an url is so someone will get the correct address.
An url does not HAVE to have www in it. Despite the fact that you can set up your browser to autocomplete, I suppose at the lowest common denominator, the cultural trend to use intitials is because one just might have somebody who goes to http://worldwideweb.address.com instead of http://www.address.com
So I suppose at the core it is to eliminate error. Though NO one with half a brain is going to hear www. and spell dubyuhdubyuhdubyuh.
And in spite of the wording of your question, regardless of the number of syllables, we type www because it is easier to type, not easier to say. (sigh) If we type www, it just makes sense that we say it when we do have occasion to say it aloud.
Maybe I'm weird, but I don't count out the syllables of what I say before I say it. Really, minimum syllabification (if there is such a word) is really not on my list of communication criteria.

Brevity is a virtue; hence, WWW instead of World Wide Web.

We DO say "World Wide Web" when it is appropriate in a sentence, altho most commonly it is shortened to "The web" . We TYPE "WWW" as an accepted shortening of the phrase.
