A grinding wheel spinning toward you will throw the sparks (and all of the metal) down, instead of spraying them up and all over the place. I like using a 4 inch hand grinder.

I don't think that the direction of rotation of the grinding wheel matters. I use a bench grinder. Just take it easy and only remove enough material to clean it up. Follow the existing angle on the blade. Do the same thing to both ends to keep it balanced.

When i sharpen my tractor blades,I wear heavy leather work gloves, remove the blade, and use a hand grinder- i dont over obsess about getting a razor sharp edge - just straighten the edge up of dings, run the grinder over the beveled edge and thats it - grinding too much will unbalance it. While the blades are off- clean and paint the deck , good time for some maintenece.

I found if you don't have a grinder wheel , using a file works good also. not a wood file, a file for metal
