My dad has this theory that teams who do well in pre-season games will suck in the regular season and vice-versa. Is this necessarily true or not?

I'd like a detailed answer instead of just the simple "yes" or "no."

You are trying to compare apples and oranges. There are totally different priorities in the pre-season and the regular season games. You could plug all the date into a computer
if you want a detailed answer, but I still wouldn't buy it. Your
dad is entitled to his opinion as an experienced fan, but I think
it amounts to a gut feeling rather than something you can prove one way or the other.

not really. the preseason is more of a gage of your rookies and your backups, how much talent you have there. most starters rb's, qb's and so on play at most 2 series. so you really cant tell what the outcome could be if they played an entire game regular season. for instance the colts have won 1 game the last 2 or 3 preseasons and look what they have done during the regular season and playoffs. its important so you know how deep your roster is but other than that you have to wait til the regular season to see jus how well your team can perform. there is some enthusiasm and want to, but when it comes down to it nobody will shed a tear if they lose in preseason. its basically to fight for roster spots. but to answer your question it does happen occasionally but not that often

In 2003 both the Patriots and Panthers went 4-0 in pre-season and ended up playing each other in the Super Bowl that same season...
Its not often but it does happen. You always want to see how good your team is. You never know if one of your backups might end up playing a big role during the regular season

While I don't think there's any one definite answer to this, it does seem like teams that do well in the preseason are doomed to failure and vice-versa. Take last season, for instance. The Raiders were 3-1 in the preseason, which is one more win than they had in the regular season; the Colts were 1-3 in the preseason (actually, going into this preseason, they'd won one of their last ten preseason games) and won the SuperBowl. All a preseason win really shows is that the winning team's practice squad players are better than the losing team's practice squad players.

The 2005 season when the Steelers won SBXL, the first team offense didn't score a point in the pre-season & the Indy Colts ALWAYS stink in the pre-season, but manage to turn things around pretty well when it counts.

i dont think so, i think that as long as the team doesnt get a big head they will do as good as they did in the pre season
