I am especially suspicious of Chloe Agnew's rendition of Ave Maria (Bach-Gounod) from their concert at the Helix Theatre in Dublin. How can one tell?

if you're talking of this performance you can calm down - this IS live (the voice is relatively "jittery", what i wouldn't expect from a studio recording used for a playback).

it's played only with a harp and Chloe singing, so there is no chance to play it playback in the midst of the audience.

Of course it's true. They ALL do that. Think about it - how does the blondie go twirling round and round while "playing" her violin without getting dizzy? She's faking it like all pop acts do. There is a speaker ok? It faces the performers - you've seen them. We call them "monitor speakers." Now here is what REALLY goes on in a Pop concert - including Celtic Fake Women:
There is a click track - a metronome- that clicks through those monitors ok? The band "plays" along to a REAL LIVE digital recording (usually made by them earlier of course) and they are live unless they screw up OR can't play it OR have to be jumping around like a goofball. If any of these are true, the soundman simply fades their mic down and fades their part on the recording in.
YES THIS IS TRUE! AND THEY ALL DO IT! MOST OF THE TIME MOST OF THE "MUSICIANS" YOU SEE ON STAGE ARE NOT PLAYING OR SINGING AT ALL!
Makes you want a refund doesn't it?

By the way their mouths move and when the songs sound EXACTLY the same as they do on the CDs. Also, some artists' voices change as they grow old...for example, you can see how elton john's voice isnt quite the same from when he first came out....so in a concert you'll know if its playback or not, he has a deeper voice now. Its just easy to tell.

its such a common practice that I assume all pop singers lip sync except the older ones that couldn't get away with it in their day ie Cher, Elton John .... to be sure listen for mistakes or just a slight flaw in the voice quality , but that isn't reliable either because they will use alternate takes for the road show also

BRAVO guitargadfly I too know some one who was on tour (in the early days of those fade ins and outs .... who was on stage doing the monitoring to keep the performance clean ... he had to where a huge floppy hat so no one could tell he was so much older

only poor bands have to play pure and all live

This is for all these idiots [like the guy above: guitargadfly] who somehow have it in their minds that musicians can't actually play and 'perform' at the same time...

Please get a life! Maybe some of your talentless pop idols have a hard time chewing gum and walking at the same time, but that doesn't mean everyone does! I've been playing music for 30 years, many of those years spent in Metal, and I can tell you, live, I would thrash/headbang, sing, AND play my parts perfectly. It's simply a matter of PRACTICE/REHEARSAL/TALENT.
_____

As for "big Celtic Women," doesn't matter whether they are big or small! I'm not real fond of their overly dramatic semi-operatic vocals... I prefer the REAL CELTIC WOMEN singers, such as Karan Casey (ex-Solas), Deidre Scanlan (Solas), Heidi Talbot, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (Altan), Beth Patterson (Kalafka), etc... Women who play real Celtic music, and have real Celtic voices...

I don't think so. I didn't watch the video, but from what I know, most pop artiste lip syncing because they usually dance or move around alo. Lip syncing is pretty rare in classical perfomences which is why they are one level higher. Lip syncing is common among many artiste anyway.

Why does that matter? Plenty of vocalists lip synch when live on stage. It is hard to move around and sing at the same time. Especially when you need to hit a high note with consistent tone...

Stage performance is just eye candy...if you enjoy the performance, does it matter?
