Why is Arby's logo a hat?

The arby's logo used to be an oven mitt, but in a re-branding campaign by Merkley + Partners, they changed it to a hat to symbolize "i'm thinking Arby's" (their new trade slogan) and to replace the very common "lightbulb" over the head.

After reading everyone else's responses maybe I'm crazy, but I definitely agree the logo is cowboy hat . . . but I think it also resembles a piled high roast beef sandwich. Does anyone else see that? Beef comes from cattle ranchers or cowboy's thus the hat . . . if you've seen an original (non-updated) Arby's sign you know the colors were all brown and white and very Western with the sign itself being shaped like the hat (that resembles a sandwich).

It's a pathetic ploy to appeal to southern redneck Bush lovers. Thats why I don't eat at Arby's unless I'm in Canada, their logo there has the majestic canadian mable leaf instead of that disgusting redneck hat.

Because when the Arby's execs looked at the designs the advertising people showed them, thats the one they picked.

it is a cowboy hat. It started out serving mostly roast beef and added the other products over time. It was supposed to be western themed, but changed slowly over time.
