I've induced previous labors with castor oil successfully.
How do the contractions feel after being induced with castor oil vs. pitocin, etc.?
Does one cause contractions to be harder than the other?

Blueviolet: Used castor oil at my CNM's advice after experiencing hypertension/ Edema through 3rd trimester with my 1st and being a week past due with my 3rd, with an almost 9lb baby(at the time they suspected the baby was 9lbs +.
And I didn't even have gestational diabetes.

Yeah pitocin starts them off STRONG and very painfully. There's no build up! It's a synthetic hormone, very powerful and some women's body's do not handle it very well, nor do some babies. Proceed with caution and only go with medical induction unless there is a real medical need for it.

I prefer natural all the way - if possible.

stay away from pitocin. It is evil! I was never induced but had to have a shot of it after my second baby to help uterus contract as I was bleeding and it wasn't shrinking. The post partum contrctions were horrible compared to labor its. I self induced(ok maybe just helped) my third baby with evening primrose oil. Its much gentler than castor oil. My mom was induced with pitocin and said it was awful.

I tried castor oil 3 times and it did'nt work for me. Your lucky! I went a week over before they induced me. It was'nt bad because of the epidural but I dialated fully and pushed for 3 hours then they said I had to have a c-section. I would recommend letting it go natural or using the castor oil. You don't want to end up with a c-section it sucked!

Castor oil stimulates the body into labor by stimulating the bowels. It doesn't keep labor going and doesn't affect the action of the uterus. Pitocin does. Both carry not insignificant risks though -- why are you considering either?

pitocin is 500 times worse. Castor oil will make your contractions longer, but it will not make them stronger like pitocin does.

I had to be induced with pitocn and it's HORRIBLE!! The most painful experience of my life. But it did make me dilate from a 4 to a 9 in a half hour.

I had pitocin with both my girls and it went fine. The good thing about it is that you can have the IV drip turned off if you want to.
