I was ten years old and in the hospital after having my appendix removed. I was totally bored and the lady in the next bed gave me a book. It was Bambi. In the forward it said 'This is a delicious book, taste the words and savor what you read'. I was hooked on reading then and like you still read about 400 books each year. When that happened it was 1958. I know that I have read well over 100,000 books in that time and even though I have slowed down, from when books were 25 to 35 cents, I still cannot get enough. I read mainly sci-fi/fantasy, mysteries, thrillers and alternate earth or time books now.

I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. I've read everything that I can get my hands on, including the dictionary. Some of my favorite authors have been Stephen King, V.C. Andrews, R L Stine to name a few. The latest books that I've read and couldn't put down were Journey Into the Night by Dee Rea and Creepers by David Morrell. Two different genres, both amazing books.

When I was 7 I discovered Harry Potter. I tried to read the first chapter and all it did was strengthen my hate of reading. A month later I was bored so I gave it another shot and I loved it after I got to the end of the second chapter!! And now I read anything I can get my hands on, and I'm sure a lot of people here also started reading because of HP.

Ralph,
I remember I was on vacation with my parents - I was probably between 8-10, and I was bored. I told my mother that, and she said something like "life is a bore to a bore" and told me to read something. I had tried to read before, but couldn't get into it; even "Little Women" did nothing for me then (though I LOVE it now). I began to read "Northanger Abbey" by Jane Austen and WOW was I hooked. From then on I was a "reading machine." I remembering devouring books like "The Mystery of the Crimson Ghost" and "Mystery of the Green Cat" both by Phyllis A. Whitney; on and on it went.

I was 8 when I discovered fairy tales from foreign lands. Baba Yaga the witch (Russian fairy tales) got me hooked on reading to the point that my parents wondered if I was spending too much time reading books! From there I checked out all the fairy tales from other countries. I loved them and I have loved reading ever since.

The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum is a thriller that's full of humor, common sense, and a really great hero.
