Christina has three substances. each substance is a cube with a volume of 6 milliliters she is going to place all three substances in a tub of water and wants to know which will float. substance A has a mall of 4 grams substance b has a mall of 8 grams and substance C has a mall of 10 grams .
which substance will float?
explain?

please help with my homework question i just dont get it i thought that the lightest thing would float but look at a safty pin and an apple the safty pin sinks and the apple floats.

You need to consider an object's density. If an object is very dense, it will sink. Density is measured by an object's mass per unit of volume, so mass divided by volume. In this case, you would solve for density in grams per milliliter of substance. Water has a density of 1 g/mL. If the density of each substance is greater than 1 g/mL, it will sink.

Using your numbers, substance A has a density of 4g/6mL which reduces to 0.67 g/mL. This density is less than 1 and the substance will float.

You've got to work out the density of each of the cubes by dividing the mass (in grams) by the volume (in ml or cm3).

If the answer is less than 1, it will float. If it's greater than 1, it will sink!

The density of water is 1g/cm3, and that is what determines whether objects will sink or float.

Safety pins are made of steel, which has a density greater than 1, so they sink. Apples are largely water themselves, and they just about float.

A has a density of 4 grams per 6 mL (6cc) = 0.67 g/cc
Since water has a density of 1.00 g/mL (g.cc) material A will float because its density is less than that of water. B and C both have densities greater that water's density, so they will sink.
