The water they are in isn't heated... the gas was heating the water above the Goldfish... That does seem a little strange though...

gold fish are like really really fat ppl, they can eat anything (not poisonous) and survive
but they only problem they have is the sudden changes in temperature, cleaness of the tank etc..
so i'm not surprised since the tank is under the deep frier which means the water is not heated and maybe kept in a good temperature due to the radiant heat

I'm thinking it has something to do with water & oil not mixing, and heat rising.
