The other decades all had better music than the trash that is around today. With few exceptions, like Tool and Smashing Pumpkins (which are left over from the previous era), there is no good stuff coming out. The 60s had groovy Hippie music (Grateful Dead, Simon and Garfunkel, The Doors). The 70s had good classic rock (Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd), the 80s had great New Wave (The Cars, New Order, Human League), the 90s had Grunge (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains). Why does modern music suck so bad?

two words. crystal meth. thats why. hardly anyone has a brain cell left to write decent music.

i love the smashing pumpkins and also alter bridge. their modern stuff doesn't quite carry the same feel as most of the new crap. I really like that the pumpkins can rearrange so many of their songs into 20 minute ballads and they just get better everytime it happens.

I don't think all of todays music sucks. There is a majority of new bands that I like Evanescence, Marilyn Manson, and Seether are my favorite of new bands but I am only 15 (haha.) Teens don't know anything about music right? I do think that older music is great. I would have loved to see Nirvana play live but I sadly never will. Pink Floyd and AC/DC are freaking fantastic. I do agree that previous eras had way more better music than today. Also partly because there is so much awful music today is because there all this kids that worship rap artist because it's so kewl to be "gansta" and all the emo's and the kids who think they're punk but have no idea of who is really punk (Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, Simple Plan, ect. are NOT punk!) I think I'm done now!

while I agree that there are a few good modern bands (none that anyone has heard of though) the answer to your question is that the music industry has stopped being about the music and has turned into a business. Record companies don't want change, they know what has sold in the past and refuse to take risks. and because of that, Artists don't create art anymore. Every other era had something to say, and the labels that they had usually allowed them to say it, now days if an artist has something to say, they have to go completely underground (an example of this is the Lead singer of TOOL, Maynard James Keenan has a side project called Puscifer that has no record label, and will never have one, www.puscifer.com for more info.) To put it simply, music today sucks because the artists see no reason to put any effort into it anymore.

also, great question.

It doesn't, there are some good underground bands (not as much as the past though) but radiostations and stuff like MTV only play the sucky ones.
What seems to be popular with most teens there days are no talent emo bands, and no talent pop. Record execs see this so they sign more and more talentless people who bang around and call it music an put them on the radio. And most teens listen to whatevers on the radio and the cycle of horrible music continues.
It's all about making money these days, the music has taken a backseat, it's sad really. Theme albums are now out, guitar solos are now out. Lyrics that are worth something are out.
Depressing isn't it?

Do you want a medal for being fifteen and liking things other fifteen year olds supposedly don't? I think you just saw this as an opportunity to gain some appreciation, for us all to go "GOOD ON YOU, YOU'RE NOT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE" Sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude, it's just slightly irritating when teenagers think they're something special for not being the 'norm'. It's happened many times. "Guys I'm 13, I don't listen to Justin Bieber or One direction. I listen to Fleetwood Mac and the Police! Why is modern music so ****?!?!?" Just listen to your music and **** what anyone else thinks. Music is all a matter of opinion. I'm a couple of years older than you and whilst I don't listen to modern music, I genuinely could not give a **** about it. I just listen to the music I love without worrying what everyone else is listening to. It doesn't matter if the music you don't listen to (i.e Bieber, trashy pop) is absolute shiite, just appreciate the music you love! Sorry if I came across as rude :(

There is tons of great music out today. Just not much in the mainstream media. They are just pushing the same crap. Go under the radar. Check out local venues, smaller labels.
I thought the same not to long ago.
Here are a few things to look into.
Little steven's underground garage - Sirius radio channel 25
or weekly radio program
Small labels
Yep Roc
Foodchain
Bloodshot
sympathy for the record industry

It's mostly mainstream stuff that sucks. There are certain exceptions, but otherwise...it's horrible. I think the one reason some people like music these days is because they have low standards. Once you listen to classic bands, your standards develop to such a level that you can't stand the music today.

Also, you forgot the 50's. The 50's had the blues and rock n' roll.

In my opinion a couple of reasons why, the record companies and MTV have ruined real rock and roll. Another reason is, not all, but a lot of these artist these days only care about the money and not the music.

There are a lot of sucky bands and music, but there are some very good singers out there. i do like the oldies thought, because they really explain what they're feeling instead of saying how hot a girl was at some club and repeating that phrase foe the entire song. LOL!!! =)

This decades's got great some pretty decent Hip-Hop and R&B.
I'll even admit I like some of it... You just have to listen.

Alot of the underground stuff is really good, too. You should check out the indie labels... they are overflowing with talent... but nobody really notices them.
I mean, michael by beldight for blue eyes is one of the most beautiful songs ever written... But nobody's really heard them.
