I was just in a city that had stores below sidewalk level. Like you could see all the stores at sidewalk level, but you could either go into the stores or outside there was a flight of steps leading down to a store that was below sidewalk level (not actually under the sidewalk, just below ground). There has got to be a name for this. Does anyone know what they're called?

Interesting question, but I don't think there is a specific word for this, just a store or shop below street level, perhaps.

Basement stores, or underground stores.
