The title of my new novel is To Serve & Protect, and it is a mystery/thriller. It is published by a small publishing house in NY. The reviews and reader feedback have been great, but my publisher's promotional budget is small, so I am looking for ways to use the web to really get the word out.

It is available on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0976680572/sr=1-4/qid=1144464334/ref=sr_1_4/102-6150727-9942510?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books

I am a novice at this so I would appreciate the help.

Even if your publisher's budget is small, they should be able to offer you suggestions. The truth is even people with major publishers usually end up pushing their advance back into merchandising and a marketing plan. Find websites where there are readers likely to enjoy this type of a book. It sounds police related. Look for police websites and chat groups. Find about maybe speaking at local police conventions. Look for libraries having local author booksignings. And get in your car and visit every bookstore you can find, dressed in your best business clothes and try to convince them to shelve a small amount of the books and see what happens. Send letters to the ones you cannot reach in person. You may have to buy a stack of sample books to spread around. Ask local police supply companies if they would consider stocking it. It is not an inexpensive proposition. You will have to spend a considerable amount of money doing this. But it takes money to make money. The best you can hope for is that if it goes well and your contract isn't too prohibitive, a larger company will become aware of it and pick it up. It is a very hard process. You will alienate members of your family and your friends because it will seem you are devoting all of your time to promotion, but that will likely be the case. Just keep thinking of ideas and saving up money. Join some online writers groups like Absolute Write Water Cooler and exchange ideas. Writers Weekly.com is a free newsletter that often has information on promotion in it. Your last resort is hiring a marketing firm to come up with a strategy especially for you. That will cost you quite a bit. Pax - C

You seem to be making a very good start. You got the title and genre across, and the author's name, publisher details and price will be on Amazon.com.
One would almost suspect that you have done this before.
On how many other sites, one wonders, have you used the same apparently innocent question?
Novice indeed!

Check out my book on genre fiction promotion -- Intent to Sell (by Jeffrey Marks)

You can also join the MurderMustAdvertise Yahoo Group, which gives suggestions on how to promote mystery/thrillers.

Get a website made for yourself. As an author you should really have one. You can list your works on there, maybe even include sample chapters. Then start slapping that web address everywhere you can! That's what I'd do anyway!

I would ask if you could get advertising space on a popular fanfiction web site. A lot of people who like to read and write visit www.fanfiction.net everyday. I know there are people on their trying to publish their own books too, you might find some one there that can answer your question.

Post a question on Yahoo! Answers about promoting your novel. Make sure to include the name of your novel and the genre. Don't forget to post a link to somewhere we can buy your book. And there you go. You're already done.
