Hang on the back filters are much more useful than underground filters. Underground filters just collect waste until it gets consumed by bacteria (not a quick process). HOB filters allow you to remove the waste from the water, and create a current. Don't even bother with the UG filter, just vacuum your gravel weekly (you would have to vacuum any way, why waste money on the UG?).

In my opinion over filtration is always better than under filtration in terms to the aquarium water quality.

But for a 2ft tank I think its not necessary to have two.. You can actually find those hang on filter with a higher filtration power to speed up the filtration process to increase efficiency..

If its a 4ft or 5 ft tank then it may get under filtration if the Bio load is high.

Some hobbyist use 2 canister filter or 1 canister filter and 1 overhead filter for a single tank..

Don't waste your time with an UG filter. Its 1960's technology. A good bio-wheel or a supplimental sponge filter will outperform a UGF day to day, and there are long term maintenance hastles with UGFs. The extra hastle of them clogging is not worth it.

There is no such thing as too much filtration. There can be too much current (which will bother your fish by swishing them all around against their will) But you can never filter too much. But in all honesty, UGFs underperform nearly every other kind of filtration. The cost benefit ratio isn't that good. You're best off putting something else in your tank.

Use both it makes it easier to siphon the waste on a under gravel. I used this method but I just used the grate piece for the under gravel nothing else. With the under gravel system.
I used the hang type filter but I still had to siphon. When the fish feed of the bottom they would push waste and food under the grate.
