Back in the olden days there was no GPS available. Sadly the navigational skills of many of our nation's top Generals were not up to snuff.
Therefore, in a brain storming session the United States Congress and the Confederate States of America agreed to only fight in areas that had knowledgeable guides in dressed in spiffy tan uniforms with Smokey the Bear hats. This proved one of the few areas that the two opposing sides were able to agree upon.
The distinguished panels of experts agreed that easy access to bathroom facilities and souvenirs tipped the scales in favor of National Parks. The key chain business in some areas grew by as much as 1,000% due to the influx of visitors who weren't usually able to leave their family farms. The bed and breakfast industry also was said to have been formed at this time.
The historic "Park Conference of 1861" was the little known name for this event. To this day, some "Park Conference Deniers" claim this event never happened.

Many of the places where major battles were fought were turned into national parks as a way to preserve history.
They weren't parks when the battles were fought, probably just undeveloped land.

The former battleground is made into a memorial park to preserve it. it wasn't a park at the time. The idea is with so many people having given their lives on that site,it shouldn't be developed for real estate.

That way everyone knew where to meet up for the rumble. Plus they have those convenient little maps, which I'm sure at the time had one dot that said "You are here" and another dot that said "The bad guys are here."
