More likely to make a mistake then what?
When we had our last ultrasound at 23 wks and 6 days the tech told us when i asked that it looked like a girl. I asked how he knew that and what are the chances he was wrong. He said first of all at that stage of development if it was a boy there would be an obvious scrotum visible. Second, he showed us very obvious girl genitals. The angle she was at we could see her vaginal lips as he pointed them out to us. No question in our minds that we have a little girl coming in early oct.
When i had my son they were right on, said he was a boy from the beginning.

I am not sure how to read these answers that are here so here is mine.
If they say it is a boy it is most likely a boy because they saw something that looked like a penis.
However if they say girl they can be mistaken because sometimes they do not see the penis and give the wrong answer.
The case where they think it is a boy because of the cord would be unusual because the umbilical cord comes from the stomach and is quite long- obviously
Personally I think they are getting it down to a science now because I have had two girls and they were both identified correctly.

at my 23 week sonogram , i was told i was having a girl... And today i went back for my 39 week sonogram to get the babys weight, and shes still a girl. My fiances mothers SON was soposed to be a girl. I think it can go both ways, if the baby is small enough, its hard to tell sometimes.

I think they're pretty accurate, or rather how much experience the sonographer is. Anyway 20 years ago, I was told I was having a boy, needless to say, I had a girl and had no girl names and all my stuff was boy stuff. It worked to my advantage because I really wanted a girl. For my second 5 years ago I was told I was having a girl and that's just what I got. Good luck. 2D

They are mistaken more when they say it's a girl and it's actually a boy because they could miss the boy part and tell you it's a girl.

I've always heard that you are more likely to have a mistake if they say it is a boy. Sometimes they can have the cord or some other body part that looks like his "parts". But, when it is a girl, and there is nothing there, there is nothing there. Of course, it could be like "Click" and be a tic-tac....hee hee.

Alas nothing is perfect...a little mystery will enhance your parentage one would hope.
They have problems identifying both. I've included a link for you.
Good Luck!

Yeah, happens all the time. Ultrasounds are not a perfect technology. There is a lot of room for error.
