-- I'll lose the kitchen appliances, the bedrooms, and the air conditioning; but I'll still have power in the bathrooms, and the washer/dryer work. The circuit breaker box is not warm and none of the breakers are tripped. If I start the dryer, the rest of the power comes back on. What do you think?

The most comon cause is the connections at the drip cap to the utilities incomming wire. If you have a meter you can tell by measuring the voltage at the power panel incoming wires. One of them will be low when the condition you described occurs. That is a utility companie's responsibility.

I think that you need to call an electrician quickly. You may have a problem with one of the feeds coming into the house, main breaker, or other problems. It is time to get professional help and get it soon. This is possibly a fire hazard situation. good luck.

That's a new one on me. Sounds like when you start the dryer something vibrates into place and electrical contact is made restoring power to those rooms cut off before. You need to call an electrician since a loose connection as this seems to be can be very dangerous and can start a fire. If you can't afford an electrician, call your power company. They may send someone out to take a look and advise you. I doubt they will make any repair though. I sure wouldn't ignore this problem.
