You can go to the grocery store and get some Orange Extract and put it directly on the tooth. This will give some immediate relief. If you want to buy over the counter pain meds; make sure its an ibprophen to decrease any swelling. My best advice is that you take him to a emergency room; they should give him some pain medications and some antibiotics to kill the infection. But you should definately ultimately take him to the dentist to pull it out.

There is a plethera of oral medicine that is over the counter for toothaches however, i found with my children that orajel will help if he will rinse his mouth with warm hydrogen peroxide mixture with water of 50%, then apply the orajel as necessary until he can see a dentist. It is not intended as a cure but to ward off the unpleasant discomfort until it can be fixed. This combination will help the pain, swelling and the warm solution of peroxide will prevent further infection and kill the germs that are irritating the root. Fix him up and make him a dentist appointment.

They have "tooth pain" medications that they sell over-the-counter at most drug stores... Orajel and the like. They're only supposed to be used as "temporary" relievers - to tide you over until you can get in to see a dentist.

They work pretty well... it's the same sort of numbing gel that dentists use on your gums before giving you a shot of Novocaine.

Pack the gums with cloves..it'll deaden the pain somewhat. If you have some real vanilla that'll help a bit too. Other than that get your AZZ to the dentist. If you live in a large city, get to the county clinic, they provide services for free or little money.

There is stuff at Walgreen's called Temprin.
I had to use it on my husband on our wedding day. Its to replace a filling that has fallen out. It also has a numbing agent in it just make sure to follow the directions carefully. good luck! P.S. you can get it pretty much at any grocery store or pharmacy. check by the toothpaste.
