Let's say YOU KNOW you're a good writer. Let's say you ask for a critique. Others in the same boat always tend seem to find something "wrong" with your story. I got confused here. This isn't clear..blah blah blah. AHA! There should be a comma here!! That sort of thing.

How does it affect you when no one wants to give you the pat on the back you deserve or at least say you're on the right track. I think it sucks.

It's funny because a lot of people will think that because they are "published" so they feel they have the authority to dis your work, but, as we all know, the amount of published garbage is voluminous. And "published" could mean just about anything nowadays....

I guess. But i've seen rejection letters where the editors will let writers know what they did well, instead of pointing out only what didn't fit.

Some people are like that, but not all. The people like that are just insecure. Like they're afraid that if your work is good their's will be diminished.

There's room for all of us. Write on, girlfriend.

Well, if you are asking for a critique then you have to be prepared for what people say. If your grammar is incorrect then it reflect on your writing. Would you rather have a few people on Y!A! tell you that you are missing punctuation, or have your finished book rejected because the grammar is terrible and no editor or publisher will read it?

Heck, even I think I am a good writer but when I give my finished work to someone objective to read and they point out mistakes I listen and change the problems. Sometimes it takes another person to correct mistakes and part that just make no sense, that is what a critique is. Its not about lieing or sparing feeling and saying "wow that was great" when it is not.

If you are going to be a writer than you better be prepared for people to tell it like it is. No one is going to coddle you, it doesn't help your writing, or prepare you for how it really is.

To publish in respected literary journals, newspapers, and publishing houses, true, is a lot different than having your next door neighbor publish your story. Regardless, if you want to be a writer, you need to be published. Also the greatest flattery is the acceptance telephone call so only worry about what the editor thinks not others.
