Lauren above is right Jones Beach on Long Island is very beautiful and so is Tobay Beach. ( South Shore ) On the north Shore is Long Island Sound. It's a body of water between Long Island and Conn.

Also look up Cold Spring Harbor , I believe it's in Huntington. There is a small Whaling Museum there.

Coney Island - it's more like an old place where New Yorkers had fun at 100 years ago. In 1958 I went on the Parachute Jump there with my dad. The parachute jump had been used at the 1936 World Fair in Queens, NY. There are 2 roller coasters there. The Cyclone is the big one and the Thunberball is somewhat smaller. Coney Island is in Brooklyn and you have to ride the Subway all the way to the end to get there. Yeah they have Nathan's hot dog eating contests and stuff like that. Also sledge hammers where you slam the thing and try to make it ring the bell. Everything is to expensive, in my judgement.

Maybe judge New Yorkers individually.

I was born in Queens, NY but got to Texas over 40 years ago.

New Yorkers don't go to Coney Island, only tourists. It may be fun to check out once though. New Yorkers go to the beaches of Long Island and the Jersey Shore in the summer.

From what I understand, the whole area will be redone soon.
If you get a chance, check out the PBS produced DVD called Coney Island.
It shows all the great parks that used to be there etc.
It is kind of sad to go there today.
