Question

What is the myth where: the kid waxs feathers onto himself and tries to fly up to the sun but the closer he gets the more the wax melts and then the feathers fall of and then he dies?

Before they took off from the prison, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, as the wax would melt. Overcome by the sublime feeling that flying gave him, Icarus soared through the sky joyfully, but in the process came too close to the sun, which melted his wings. Icarus fell into the sea, the area which bears his name, the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos.

That's the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. Icarus is the boy whose feathers fall off because he flies too close to the sun.

That's the fall of Icarus. His father was Daedulus, a genius inventor who was trapped by a despotic ruler because of his talents. Daedulus made the wings to escape him. Unfortunately, his boy went too close to the sun and fell in the ocean.

The characters were Icarus and Daedelus. (Daedelus being the one who fell) That's what I have always heard it called, I believe that how it is listed in Bullfinches. I believe that Icarus also designed the Labrynth used to hide the Minotaur and used the wings to escape his own construction.
