XXC = 100-20 = 80

XIV = 10 + (5-1) = 14

I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000

If smaller numbers follow larger numbers, the numbers are added. If a smaller number precedes a larger number, the smaller number is subtracted from the larger. For example:

* VIII = 5+3 = 8
* IX = 10-1 = 9
* XL = 50-10 = 40
* XC = 100-10 = 90
* MCMLXXXIV = 1000+(1000-100)+50+30+(5-1) = 1984

I agree with the above, XIV is 14, but XXC is not a valid input, it should be LXXX.

XIV is 14

XXC is 80 (I guess) but not how it should be written.

Roman numerals only use ONE lower number appearing before a larger number for subtraction.

80 should be written: LXXX

"XXC" is just not correct.

I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1000
