Fruit flies are drawn to over ripe fruit......eat it or get rid of it.

Your friends might be soil fungus gnats or even misc critters coming up from the drain. Soil gnats in houseplants are easily eliminated by pour soapy water through the soil, let sit and rinse through. The drain "gnats" are killed by pouring about a half cup of PineSol down the drains, putting in the stoppers and leaving for a few hours. When you come home run water down the drains to wash away the smell. You can use bleach or other type product, I fine PineSol's odor more tolerable than bleach....unless it's the scented bleach.

Simple, don't leave any fruits out or in the trash can or you will have fruitflies. Use those glue traps to catch most of them.

Find out what is attracting them and either move it outside, dispose of it or put it in a contained area so they can't get to it.

Place small bowls of vinegar in each room.

Get rid of all fruit and sweet smelling items.
