Technology is applied research. There is no such thing as "pure" research. Every research project has a question to be answered. "What is the nature of a carbon-carbon bond?" To answer that question, a person might have to spend years (his salary unpaid by economically interested people) experimenting with highly strained hydrocarbon molecules.

At the end, the experimenter might come up with a new finding. The experimenter publishes his findings, and either he establishes a new upstart company, or he sells his patent on his discovery to the buyer.
