Sadly, your statement holds true. Childish tactics create childish results, many on here are seemingly well learned but in reality, are not smart at all. Endorsing and / or passing on of info unquestioned is not debating. Forming an opinion based upon research of all factors relating to an issue makes for good ones own debate position. Name calling and personal attacks only taint the individual using such and relegate their opinion to the waste basket. Typing in all caps isn't constructive thinking either but many do so thinking that will make others side with them. That particular side is one I prefer to stay away from. Disagreement with ones statement is fine but most here discredit themselves by the methods used when expressing such. I love a spirited debate and wish more people could form their own opinions and join in rather than co-mingling with a few uninformed / misinformed sheep. The educational system in America needs to go back to training minds, not just filling them. And yes there are a few typo's in this response, they are there for a reason that may become self evident.

One should always first and foremost debate the issue but once that is over with and out of the way ,debating the person can be fun, enjoyable especially if said person is a racist, evidenced as a morally and ethically bankrupted person ,a religious fanatic,an arrogant ignorant person or a Republican. (Sorry, the last one I just had to throw in .).
There is also those people who post horribly inaccurate/misleading information including just blatant lies , the consequences of which ,depending on the seveity and importance, can be very destructive in the world.
With these people I don't even debate the issue but simply zero in immediately on the person and blast them out of the water with of course all necessary evidence.

I normally just say "I don't know much about that" if I am not up on an issue. Otherwise I am a very skilled debater and have at it. I have notice some people I know on the right tend to just talk louder when it's obvious they don't know anything about an issue. Repeating it louder doesn't make you sound any smarter!

On this forum I find that to be true more often than not.
But not for me personally.
Edit - I wouldn't categorize name calling / smearing as debating a person.

That seems to be the way politics in America, and on YA, work.
