Yes, insects are members of the animal kingdom. Some people use the word "animal" to mean "mammal". Obviously insects are not mammals. However, all members of the animal kingdom can rightfully be called "animals". In an introductory zoology course (zoology being the study of animals), you would study both vertebrate animals and invertebrate animals, including insects.
