I assume you are referring to Benjamin Franklin's famous kite experiment. Franklin published a description of this experiment in 1750, and it was carried out on May 10, 1752 by Frenchman Thomas-François Dalibard, who used an iron rod instead of a kite. Franklin may have conducted the experiment himself on June 15 of that year, but it's not certain. Regardless, Franklin did not discover electricity. Some forms of it were known in the ancient world, and the modern study of electricity began around 1600 when William Gilbert of England coined the New Latin term "electricus".

Neither Franklin nor Edison "discovered" electricity. People knew about electricity long before Franklin. What Franklin demonstrated was that lightning was a form of electricity, which had been speculated but not proved before his well known kite experiment. Edison invented a number of devices and technologies for the practical use of electricity. Cheers
