Its most likely slugs.Probably the tiny ones. Either they are finding a way in or.....do you have a pet? Dog or Cat? Sometimes if your pet is sitting outside the slugs tend to crawl into their coat. I have this problem with my dog, many times he comes bounding in only to drop a slug or two (spiders as well) in the house!! If no pets, try to find out where they're getting in and put a piece of copper tape or copper foil by that area. Slugs won't travel over copper...

It is what you first thought, a slug trail. We have an old house and we are always seeing this. It isn't sticky once it's been on the carpet for even a short time and just brushes away at a touch. I've even put slug pellets down and killed the odd one or two, but they always seem to come back, don't know how they get in but think it's because we have an open fire and bring in logs to burn and the slugs must be on them.

What I think you may have is a small slug , like snail trails they dry very quickly and wipe away with a touch. They can live inside in extremely clean environments.Had a very similar thing in a pub I used to frequent, went on for years, they tried everything to get rid of it, searched and searched, then one day it was spotted out on it's rounds..... no problem after that. You may have to stalk it.
Good luck.

I know this is absolutely silly sounding, but try sprinkling very very fine salt around the edges of rooms and windows, anyhting that has access to the inside of walls or outdoors (like the hole they sometimes put in floors for cables). And when you vacuum, just put some more down, its pet and child safe because its only salt. And its relatively inexpensive.
Hope this helps! It worked for me!
