I'm wantin to buy a new computer but I don't know much about them. I want to use it for music down loading, playing games, networking. So I want something fast and with plenty of memory to use for storage. Does anyone have any tips as of what to look for?

Hi,

You really want to buy a 'brand' name computer, one that has an outstanding warranty service too. Something like an HP would serve you well.

You didn't mention if you wanted a desktop PC or a notebook.

Most new computers today can do everything you want and more. But since you're buying a new computer, try to make sure you have the following.

1. You might as well get a Vista operating system with your system as that would mean all of the peripherals are Vista acceptable and most new systems come with some version of Vista on them.

2. Get yourself a nice 19" widescreen monitor. Acer makes a very nice one for under $160.00. That is if you're going to buy a desktop. Most new computer systems allow you to select your own monitor, or for a few bucks more upgrade to a widescreen. It makes all the difference in the world in your viewing pleasure to go BIG on the monitor.

3. Make sure you have at least 1 Gigabyte of memory, preferablly 2 gigabytes if running Vista.

4. Make sure you have a power supply of at least 450 watts or higher. You will need that power to run everything and as you add new devices to your computer.

5. Go with SATA drives as most newer motherboards support SATA. They're a faster hard drive using less energy.

6. Go with a good graphics card having at least 256 megabytes of memory on the graphic card itself. It would be good if your system had a PCI-Express x 16 graphic card slot as they are better over the AGP and PCI graphic card slots. Most newer computers have the PCI-E x 16 slots.

7. Get yourself a good pair of headphones, comfy, and you can always buy a good pair of speakers later. It doesn't have to come with the computer.

I grabbed one link for you of a basic computer system, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3149016&CatId=2619

Two popular online computer stores often mentioned here is Tigerdirect.com and Newegg.com. Both of these stores I've purchased a few computer systems from and they have exceptional customer support, fast shipping, everything.

If you're not sure what you want, you can even call them and they will help you to decide. Educate yourself first and shop around too. Look at some of the other Yahoo Answers on what type of new computer to buy as well.

Lastly, it's worth every penny to buy yourself a good internet security suite (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall) to protect your investment. Don't even connect to the internet unless you have a good firewall and anti-virus program on it.

An excellent, and free, software firewall and anti-virus program is Comodo. Visit them at: http://www.comodo.com

Good Luck to you!

Storage is the hardrive size--more than 80 gigabytes should be plenty. Fast depends on processor speed and amount of ram. 3Ghz is good for speed and 1 to 2 gigabytes of ram is enough for most games. If you play very demanding games you will need a video card of at least 256 MB of video ram. You can get this power in a desktop at a lot less money than in a laptop.

I got one. you want a computer with at least 500mb hard drive. and about 2 GB of memory if it is just for music. a graphics card that would play nice (preferably nvidia geforce 7000). hard disk drive with DVD multi video so it can play every thing! A motherboard that is a asus(because it pritty much compatible with pciE ports.)

or

go to newegg.com and buy a computer that is about $800.00 but, building it yourself is 25-30% cheaper!
