As everyone says, on land a hippo would win, but in deep sea a great white would win. The question is, in what environment would it be a relatively fair fight?
I would imagine a pretty good match in a fairly deep river, maybe like 10-15 feet deep. That way both animals can swim around and manuever pretty well. However the shark would not be able to attack from a distance at a very high speed like it normally would in open water. But the water would be deep enough to give the great white a standing chance at the hippo.
I would be very intrigued by this fight. Great whites like to eat seals and dolphins, so it seems that a hippo would be a little bit bigger than normal. And given that the water is shallow, I imagine this would be quite a challenge for the great white. On the other hand, a hippo would not have experience fighting such an adversary as a great white shark. Hippos do scrap with crocodiles from time to time - in this type of environment as well - and this would provide valuable experience against the formidable predators. But a great white shark would be more vicious and would escape with greater ease.
In the end, I would say the deciding factor would be the availability of land for the hippo. A huge advantage is the ability to escape the fight and rest if need be. If the great white is struggling, I imagine that it would be able to get away and swim to safety. I can't picture the hippo really holding it into submission unless it hit the shark so hard that it knocked it out (which is a distinct possibility, given that a shark's weakness is its nose, eyes, and gills, so a blow to the head from a hippo could be devastating). But if the hippo cannot escape to land, I don't see it standing much of a chance in a prolonged fight. The hippo would have to kill the shark early in the fight with a nice head shot.

On land, obviously a hippo.
In the ocean and seas (if it was fresh water, the shark would die) the shark, if in good health and large enough, would win because they prey on elephant seals which are about the same size as hippos and walruses too.
Also, contrary to what some one said on here, white sharks aren't the most vicious animals on the planet. Far from it. People can actually dive with them without the barrier of a cage. Each shark has it's own disposition and the females are usually more docile. They are very curious and will test things with their mouths but that's usually fatal for the reciprocant.
The bull shark is actually the most ferocious animal because it has more testosterone than any known animal and is reputed to have caused more human deaths than any other shark.
But then again, hippos are responsible for the most human fatalities of all the large animals, not including humans themselves.
The MOST ferocious animal of all is human. We've caused more deaths than any other animal and with full conscious awareness.

If a hippo wandered into deep ocean water where the great white ranges it would be lunch. It'd be all but impossible for a great white to go into a hippos normal environment.

Great white if the fight was in the water, but the hippo if it were on land.

Depends. On land, I'd have to give it to the hippo. At sea, my money'd be on the Great White.
