My niece can't listen to "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and I was telling her about some other really sad country songs. Please help me add to my list. The ones that I know are:

George Strait's "River of Love." The others that are closes to country, after Strait, are probably Jake Owen and Rodney Atkins (the theme of Atkins' song, "It's America," is pure country though!). However, Owen often has more of a southern rock sound (but I still like his music), including "Don't Think I Can't Love You." As for Martina McBride, MOST of her songs seem to be pop, but she is a great singer. Her album TIMELESS, which consisted of all classic country covers, was outstanding! Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Sugarland, Taylor Swift and Martina McBride's songs seem to be more on the pop side--especially Swift's song (and, yes--I do know that Underwood's is a cover of a Randy Travis song, but she makes it sound more pop!). I will say that Rascal Flatts' guitarist, Joe Don Rooney, isn't a bad musician--they're all just not country though!
