I went to Medellin Colombia, some years ago, and saw some HUGE sunflowers... I left and had someone get a bag of some seeds together to bring them for me to give to my mother since she loves sunflowers, they are her favorite.

Does anyone know where I can buy these type of sunflower seeds here in the US? The friend that was supposed to bring the bag got stopped by customs and supposedly didn't allow him to bring them in the country, I got sooo pissed!!

The flower itself was as large as a human face, and get soo heavy you need to tie them to something to have them stand up... supposedly they use those flowers to feed cows in Colombia... I don't intend on doing a trip anytime soon, advice such as variety or any other info that can help me track the flower down is appreciated!!

Thanks

Most sunflower will grow to enormous sizes if given the right amount of water and feeding. They are grown here in the UK every year with fantastic results by children.

Start by growing Russian Mammoth sunflowers and then save the seed from the largest head and replant. Over time you'll develop your own strain of supersize flower heads.

Russian Mammoth (or just Mammoth) is available from several seed catalog companies beginning this winter.

Realize it's not only the seed, but also the growing conditions. Sunflowers don't like to be fussed about but still need water and nutrients.

I grew one a couple of years ago..... it was about 20 ft, not bad considering I had never grown on in my life before........to be honest it scared me. in the end it got so heavy it fell down from the weight.
I think it grew so big cause our water is pretty salty, I live on a Greek island and water is delivered my boat. just a thought try adding salt to the watering can.
