59, Babe Ruth in 1921. He pitched only 9 innings that year.

In his last season as a "real" pitcher, he hit 29 for the Red Sox in 1919.

If you only mean homers hit by a pitcher while he was pitching (not playing another position too), then it's Wes Ferrell with 9 in 1931 for the Cleveland Indians.

Ruth's totals don't count because the majority of home runs he hit were in games where he was an outfielder. He never hit as many as Ferrell while serving as a pitcher.
