It's simple really. It means to think outside the given parameters. Be creative and open minded.

First, you have to know what "the box" is; As Rickie Lee Jones once sang "You can't break the rules until you know how to play the game."
The box is the set of rules, the societal conventions, what you and everyone else simply expect.
A friend of mine went for a job interview. When he arrived, he was given a number, something like 46. Then they called number six. He realized that odds were pretty good the guy would make a decision before his turn came, so he quietly left and went outside, wrote a note on a piece of paper, then walked in and quickly told the receptionist "Give this to Mr. Smith right away, please." and as she headed in to the interviewer, he quietly took his seat and waited his turn.
He ultimately got the job. All the note said was "Do not make a decision until you see #46."
That's an example of thinking outside the box. There was no rule against doing what he did, but everyone accepted that there was.

Like other people said, something that doesn't normally come to the mind and is creative. For example, if you had to write an essay, don't write the normal first-person, but instead write it from the view of an animal or a garden gnome. =] It sounds strange but I always get A's that way, as long as the teacher likes it. If you have to write an essay about yourself, make fun of yourself. If it's for a project, go the extra mile, make it pretty, and different from what everyone else's will seem like.
In a literal way, think of this, just a normal box. That is the usual teenager's/child's mind. Now think, if you could just get past that boundary, think of how much the people would admire you. It's that simple. =)

I'm not a christian nor do I attend church or have a religion, however, all to often I hear people speak of good and evil.
The opposite of good is technically bad, so would not evil be the opposite of grace and therefore evil can only be defeated by love and peace which comes with grace. Love and peace does not commonly come with good.
That's how bored I was recently. Sorry if this was a poor example.

Its just an expression that means comeing up with somthing that probably is not that obvious to others. Actually think hard on somthing instead of going with an easy way out or something sooo obvious.
Thinking in diffrent ways mostly.

I write scripts and I am always trying to come up with ideas that have not allready been thought up and completed in film. I like to write about what I already know. It's usually something I been interested in. Then, I add twists.
The best thing when writing a story is describing a character first. Let's say I made up the name Penny Torrez. I would then make up her age, hair color, eye color, weight, likes, dislikes, hobbies, jobs/career/volunteer work, relationships, relatives?, fears, anti-social?, friends, easily tempted?, music, cloths type, pets?, etc. Did Penny go through something in her past that makes her not want to be in a relationship or even make friends? What obsticale will she have to undergo in order to be transformed into a woman who trusts ppl and isn't afraid of being in a relationship. The story could end with Penny gaining more then she had when the story began.
What also helps me is to rest. I lay down, close me eyes, and picture movie's in my head. I like to think of things I wish I could do, who I would spend the time with, and the time of day. I would love to spend time with friends on the boardwalk and just go shopping at night while fireworks rain down in the sky from a distance. I could put this in a story. Maybe a friend will betray another friend. Maybe it's all a misunderstanding?
Personally, I never write about love and breakups. It has already been done. I have met many youth having problems writing love stories, poems, and scripts. It all ends the same way. It can be very hard to be original when writing about love.
I have also just started with weird words or sentences. Once I found the words "freeze vains" on the internet. I then wrote a short fiction story about a man on death row in 2330. In this time a new form of killing was invented. People on death row would be frozen to death.
Coming up with a list of words (some weird) have helped me write stories on topics I had never thought about writing.
One time a teacher wrote words on a bunch of little papers. One basket was filled with words about things or ppl. The other basket was filled with papers with places written on them. The students had to pick one paper from each basket. I got "King" and "Bathroom". I wrote a short comedy story about a King who disliked one of the royal members in his family and thought ways to take revenge on the member.
Observing also helps me to write stories. When I go to different places I picture what could happen there. (i make up events)
When I attended high school my English teachers made me read fiction stories about why things were. (Mythology) I then wrote a mythology story of my own about how "write" and "wrong" came to be invented. This story was wierd and different. My creative writing teacher loved it.
Anything allready written I find boreing. When I write something that I myself enjoy reading, I know I thought outside the box.
