Polygamy isn't a sin as long as the relationship is still 1 man and 1 wife. The man is married to the wives. The wives aren't married to each other. It is still 1 man 1 wife, even if he has 2 wives.

Why is it illegal?

Based on the first amendment, there is no reason for there to be any laws regarding marriage if one considers it an establishment of religion. And if your religion allows polygamy, they outlawing it violates the free practice clause. As long as all of the people involved are consenting adults who know what they are getting into, then I really don't see why it is anyone else's business. If a government wanted to restrict what it would recognize as a civil marriage, that is it's prerogative, but it has no right to outlaw a religious union. Just as the state cannot force a church to recognize a civil marriage, a church cannot force a state to recognize a religious one. As a state would have the right to set limits on when and how many marriage licenses they will issue, but that would have no impact on religious ceremonies. Whether or not something is a sin is a religious issue, not a legal one.

It is a function of religious values. Overtime, those values have shaped laws and social norms. Here in the US, it arose partly as a backlash against the Church of Latter Day Saints. Opponents, point to statistics that suggest such practices lead to increased rates of child exploitation. Other cultures do accept polygamy to a limited degree with contraversal results.

What? If a man has two wives, he has two wives, not two one wives. Polygamy is wrong because typically the women become overly subservient to men. Usually, they are brainwashed that it is acceptable for one man to control everything about your life. Usually the men that engage in polygamy exhibit tendencies of insecurity. Plus, how can you reasonably expect to deal with more than 1 wife?!

Sinfulness and legality aren't the same thing.
It's not a sin to drive 70 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone, but it's illegal.

It's not illegal (in most places) to cheat on your spouse, but it's a sin.

It's illegal, partly because of discrimination against Mormons, but today the law can be justified on the ground that it's extremely cruel toward women... most of the SLDS members or others who practice polygamy choose brides that are 12 or 13, are usually not able to financially support the huge families they create, and subrograte the rights of women to the singular, dominant male.

Because in Western Europe, it developed that one man and one woman made a marriage. That came over to America and the moralists of the time passed laws against it. You claim it isn't a sin. That is not the criteria of a law. The law is that which, under the U.S. Constitution is legal.
Adultery was a crime, isn't now, but is still a 'sin' as is gay sex. Think for a moment if tobacco was just discovered, do you think anyone could smoke legally? No. Can you sell cigarettes to a minor? No. Is it a sin? No.
