Sorry to be "that guy", but what's being peddled as punk these days isn't. I'm not going to go into some strict, elitist definition. There are several eras of punk and very few bands are 100% punk on what is a completely subjective scale. Some of the early stuff was pretty crappy quality too. It's not nearly as polished as some of the "punk" stuff that's out today. You'd be lucky to find some of the early stuff.

Check out early stuff from the Stooges and the MC5. They were making punk-style rock in the 60s. So were some early surf, garage and rockabilly bands.

As far as the later stuff goes, I can barely remember the names of some of them since many fizzled into non-existence before their EP was even pressed. Many will say the Circle Jerks, the Dead Milkmen, TSOL, the Dead Kennedys, JFA, the Minutemen, the Cramps would be representative of the early to late 80s.

Into the 90s the punk asthetic and attitude was adopted by some that would by anyone's definition not be seen as punk. Green Day did a pretty good job as did Op Ivy, but then you get into the Blink 182-type bands that just got some tattoos and a haircut. Blink is about as punk as Avril Lavigne.

The important thing to know is that you don't find punk on iTunes or MTV. Hell, you probably don't find it on MySpace either. Think of the worst venue in town and go to it. That's where you'll find punk.

The Ramones, The Jam, Joy Division, etc.

Actually, you already got the Sex Pistols and The Clash, and maybe the Buzzcocks, so really the Ramones and the Jam are the only needed additions for true punk rock. Joy Division is post-punk. Maybe Dead Kennedys and the Misfits too? Don't know...never listened to them.

I think you would LOVE the Klaxons. And Tokyo Police Club, Interpol, and Death from Above 1979 (actually you might love them as well).

For older punk music try Dead Kennedys, Joy Division, Fugazi, and Minor Threat. And early Sonic Youth stuff is always great.
