What type of fantasy are you looking for? Do you want the fairy tale feel? If so, try stuff like Stardust by Neil Gaiman and Once Upon a Winter's Night by Dennis McKiernan. If you want teen sort of fantasy, easy to read and follow, try Tamora Pierce's The Immortals series and Song of the Lioness series or Garth Nix's Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen *I personally didn't care for Lirael and Abhorsen, but some of my younger friends loved them and I can be pretty snobby about fantasy tropes*. If you want something really intense and detailed, you can go for The Sun Sword Series by Michelle West, The Tales of Einarinn by Juliet E. Mckenna, Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, and the Dragon Prince and Dragon Star trilogies by Melanie Rawn. If you want more high end fantasy, but lighter reads than the ones I just listed, try the Cast series by Michelle Sagara and The Witches of Eileanan by Kate Forsyth...there's a lot of fantasy out there...you need to decide what type you're looking for.

The Lord of the Rings, and generally the Tolkien legendarium. It's the best high fantasy out there, considering it's the first.

The Harry Potter series are relatively well-written.

The first book, Wizard's First Rule of The Sword of Truth series, is OK. Afterwards though, it gets terrible to read.

This year I'm into dragons. Right now I'm reading Throne of Jade (Temeraire series by Naomi Novik). Before that I read the Age of Fire books by E E Knight & DragonKin(first book) by Robin Wayne Bailey(need to still read the 2nd and 3rd).

For fantasy overall, I enjoyed Terry Brooks' "Kingdom of Landover" series, it's 5 books about a rich businessman who purchases a magical realm from a magazine. They're enjoyable.

I really like Holly Black books. Her books Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside (sequel to Tithe) all deal with fairies and goblins, yet are about teens and real life problems that come with being a teenager. Another author is Robin McKinley who takes stories such as Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty, etc. and writes them in a new way. Of course, everyone is going to recommend Harry Potter as they should. If you go to a library site, you can do a search by subject and just search under fantasy. That way you can not only read descriptions of each book that looks interesting but you know your library has it for you to borrow.
Edit: "The Folk Keeper" by Franny Billingsley is one of the best books I've read, you'd love it.

I read David Eddings Belgariad series when I was 15 and I loved it so I would highly recommend. It starts with Pawn of Prophecy. I just finished reading Pawn for the zillionth time. He is a great author. I also love Terry Brooks Shannara series. The first one is The Sword of Shannara. Good luck!

as if it hasnt been repeated enough, the harry potter books and the lord of the rings. they really are good reads, thats why anybody who reads this genre will recommend them to you.

also, you can try the chronicles of narnia by c.s. lewis, or the once and future king by t.h. white, about merlin and king arthur and camelot.

I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:

http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book, and a "reader's choice" list of favorite books.

I hope this helps.
