In very simple terms its a "breeding population" within a species. Its the total sum of genetic coding for that group. For instance you could say that poodles represent a gene pool, but it would also be true that they are part of the gene pool for all canine sepcies.

The gene pool of the human species would literaly be the sum of all of the individual genes that exist throughout all of us. Thus if someone is killed who had a unique Gene or was the last in the line with that gene before he has had a chance to procreate he has removed that set of genes from the pool (without the advent of human cloning)

Anywho . . . The "gene pool", though quite broad among humans, which creates enough differences in the DNA to prevent the occasional "bad" mutation from overwhelming and, thus, potentially, destroying the population (with some exceptions), plagues zoo keepers and animal breeders, because of "inbreeding", or the repeated mating of species within the same "family" (i.e., cousins, etc).
For the record, "good" mutations, such as, but not limited to, increased cranial/brain capacity, are necessary for any species to evolve (please keep your political rhetoric to yourself!). ;) So, in essence, we are all "mutants"! Neat, huh?

Anyone who is part of the vast group of people who are going to breed and make babies, of future generations. Some morons to die off and leave the gene pool before they can spawn more baby morons.--Some are lucky enough to pass their moron gene to future morons.
