I exclusively breastfeed right now. I plan to wean my baby at 1 year because when i go back to work ill be working with dangerous cytotoxic drugs and radiation. I was wondering if it would be ok to start her on formula at one year of age? Would there be any benefits vs giving cows milk?

At one year, the baby should be getting most of her nutrition from solid foods. Formula is unnecessary at that point, and whole milk should be given instead.

My pediatrician says it's ok to keep your child on formula. However there is a different type of formula for an older child than a younger child. I believe it's called Lipil Next Step, and it's recommended up to 2 years. It has different vitamins in it geared towards a toddler's needs more so than a young baby. We switched to cow's milk ourselves but my friend stayed on the formula.

Formula is not needed past the age of 1. That is when babies get their nutrition from solid foods. Go with the cow's milk and save yourself another weening step.

She doesn't need formula at one year of age, just wean her on to whole milk. Also, don't start her on a bottle at this age, put the milk in a cup.

Yeah at one yr old your baby should be on more solids than milk but the milk should be full fat cows milk. Call your local WIC office and ask them about it. You can speak with a registered dietician for free and they specialize in infants and children.

Skip the formula and go right to cows milk. You should try giving your child the milk before you decide not to nurse anymore. It could take awhile for your child to get used to the taste, temp and texture.

Cows milk is fine and easier to me. Just pour it in a bottle and you're done. No mixing the powder anymore. My twins love chocolate milk. They're hooked. Make sure to use Vitamin D milk. They need the extra fat to help in their brain development and other important stuff. Not to mention its cheaper and with the costs of diapers and everything else every dollar counts.

After one year your baby won't need formula. I breastfed for 14 months and then went straight to whole milk. It probably wouldn't hurt her to give her formula, but it certainly isn't necessary. Just give her a multivitamin everyday.

I know that formula-fed babies are usually off formula at 1 year and onto whole milk.

If you are concerned about nutrition because of the lack of solids. There are formulas for older babies.
