If you connected a Routher to a modem the world as we know it would end. That is because "Routher's" don't exist. Space and time would become one and the universe would implode. If you connected your modem to a "Router" however that would be ok.

I connected my router using a standard Ethernet cable.

On the back of the router and the dsl modem, there should be what looks like a large phone socket. The router could have several such sockets. There should be an indication on the router or in the documentation on which socket to use.

You simply need to run a cable from router to the modem.

You can get Ethernet cables most places that sell routers and other computer gear.

If your linksys wireless router also has a cable modem, I am not sure if the above method will work. You would need to check your documentation.

Also, please insure you secure your wireless network. Otherwise, anyone within range can access it and you may be held responsible for the sites they access or items they down load. Not to mention they can use all of you band width.

You connect the cat-5 cable that comes from the modem into the port labeled internet on the back of the router. Once you have done that you simply connect any computers you want to have a direct wire connection to with more cat-5 cables.

You connect the other end of the existing cat5 Ethernet cable into the wireless router instead of your NIC (network interface card).
This goes into the WAN or Internet port of the wireless router.

plug the dsl modem wire (that use to plug into ur pc) into the router (wan port) plug in desktop to the router (lan port) log into router input proper information (get notebooks mac address off it and use mac filtering, disable ssid broadcast, use encryption
NOTE :: some providers require a mac address registered to the modem itself... if this is the case, you must unplug the modem for varying amounts of time (10min - 4hrs) to release the stored mac address in the modem before your setup will work right.
