Mole fraction is the number of moles of one substance in the solution divided by the total number of moles of all kinds of substances in the solution.
Because mole fraction is computed as moles divided by moles it has no units.
Example:
3.89 x 10^-3 mole N2 plus 1.54 x 10^-3 mole H2
Total moles = 5.43 x 10^-3
Mole fraction of N2 = 3.89 x10^-3 / 5.43 x 10^-3 = 0.716
Mole fraction H2 = 1.54 x 10^-3 / 5.43 x 10^-3 = 0.284
Note : the sum of mole fractions is = 1
If you know the mole fraction of all but one component in a solution then you can calculate the mole fraction of that last component from the fact that in a given mixture the sum of the mole fractions equals unity.

All these terms are used to describe the concentration of a solution. A solution is a homogenous( same throughout its volume) mixture of a solute and a solvent. 1 Mole of a substance contains 2.032 x 10^23 molecules/atoms. number of moles of a given substance A = (Given mass of A) / (Molar mass or molecular mass of A) Mole fraction of substance A = (Number of moles of A) / ( Total number of moles of all substances in the solution) Mass Fraction of substance A = Mass of substance A / Total mass of solution ppm = (Mass of substance A x 10^6 ) / ( Mass of entire Solution)

RE:
what is mass fraction?

the mass of a species in a system divided by the total mass of the system. it is a dimensionless ratio fyi.

example. let's say you have a solution of 5 kg ethanol + 10 kg water.

the mass fraction of ethanol = 5 / (5 + 10) = 5 / 15 = .3333

mass fraction does not equal mole fraction....

in the above example mole fraction is moles ETOH / moles total.

moles ETOH = 5 kg / (46 kg / kmole) = 0.11 kmole
moles water = 10 kg / (18 kg / kmole) = 0.56 kmole

so mole fraction ETOH = 0.11 / (0.11+ 0.56) = 0.16

leads to several answers, but I think what you want is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abundance_of_the_chemical_elements
where the mass fraction is the percentage *by weight* of a chemical or element.
An alternative might be the mole fraction, which would be percentage by number of atoms (or molecules) which would be different, if the atoms or molecules have differing weights.
