Dean Koontz would be my first recommended author. His books are incredible as far as horror / suspense goes. Secondly, I'd recommend Jefferey Deaver, author of "The Bone Collector" which was made into a movie with Denzel Washington. His books are more mystery / suspense.

I have a great book for you! I just finished reading it and was very surprised at how good of a horror novel it was. My wife read it after me, and she loved it! It had been awhile since I had read a really good scary novel.
Summer of Night by Dan Simmons
There is a sequel to it too if you like it. The sequel is good too, not as good as the original, but still good. It is called,
A Winter Haunting

Dracula is the only great horror book I have ever read. Free online!
Mystery
any Sherlock Holmes, also free online
Elijah Baley books by Asimov - great both as scifi and as mysteries
Agatha Christie - all of her stuff is pretty good, though generally not as good as the 2 mentioned above
I hope this helps.
