I understand the proponents of alternative versions of the events of 911.?

There are many unanswered questions. A great wrong was committed. A huge crime. Justice demands that we show beyond a reasonable doubt what happened and who was involved at every level. I don't know exactly what happened, but I think we should want to know. But why are those who believe the gov't version sooo adamant that that version must be accepted? That anyone who doesn't is crazy. Why are they soo anxious to go along with the official account. They offer little evidence and no proof to convince me that the planes alone caused the collapse of the WTC towers while others, dozens of reasonable, sober, relevant professions, offer evidence to the contrary. The gov't offers no proof that an airliner hit the Pentagon....but something did.

I'm sorry some of the less intelligent answerers can only resort to name-calling and insults, but it simply shows they have little worthwhile dialog to contribute to this issue.
You're right: this is a serious issue, and "we the people" have a Constitutional right - and obligation - to ensure that the government's version of events is absolutely accurate and truthful.
Perhaps the events of 9-11 happened exactly as our government claims; perhaps not. Cell phone calls could have been faked; even what witnesses 'saw' might be subject to conjecture, as are the conspiracy theorists' interpretations. But, as events have unfolded, I think "we the people" deserve to be absolutely certain - beyond a shadow of any doubt - that our government did not participate in, or know about, the events that transpired.
Consider how our government has lied to us in the past:
a) There is still speculation that FDR knew about the pending attack on Pearl Harbor, but refused to prevent it - knowing that it would entangle the U.S.A. in World War II;
b) The government has still not satisfactorily explained all the events that took place in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, especially to those who lived there and witnessed the whole thing;
c) Our government lied about U-2 spy planes being flown over the U.S.S.R. until Khrushchev shot one down and displayed it for all the world to see;
d) The Warren Commission submitted a whitewashed, sanitized version of the JFK assassination, then sealed all documents for 75 years (until 2038), when most of us who were alive on 11-22-63 will not be around to challenge the report, or even view the evidence;
e) Some people believe that the moon landing on 7-20-69 was nothing more than something staged on a movie set;
f) The Pentagon denies the existence of Area 51 even though it's identified on official government maps;
g) The White House lied about a third-rate burglary at the Watergate Hotel until two young reporters dug out the truth and forced the resignation of a U.S. President;
h) Our government lied about U.S. battleships being 'attacked' in the Gulf of Tonkin, which entangled us in the Vietnam War;
i) The military lied about the effect Agent Orange would have on Vietnam veterans;
k) The Oval Office lied about 'weapons of mass destruction', which embroiled us in an unconstitutional, illegal, unjustified, immoral 'war' against another sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the United States;
l) The military lied about the torture and sexual abuse of 'detainees' - in direct violation of the rules of the Geneva Convention, to which the U.S. is a primary signatory;
m) The U.S. lied about 'secret' CIA prisons;
n) The government continues to lie about the real reasons why we're on a murder rampage in Iraq.

WHY is it so hard to believe that the government MIGHT be lying about the events that unfolded on 9-11-01? A few thousand innocent civilians would mean nothing to an administration that puts OIL and WAR PROFITEERING above the lives of Iraqi citizens and U.S. soldiers.

WHY did the government hurriedly use much of the scrap metal from the Twin Towers to build a new battleship instead of stockpiling that material for further investigation and future examination? It seemed a rush to judgment, at the very least - a cover-up, at worst. -RKO- 08/21/07

The US. Government has lied about many wars. The increase of troops in Vietnam was based on an attack in the Tonkin Gulf that never happened. Some say that Roosevelt knew about Pearl Harbor and let it happen to get support to join World War Two. The Spanish-American War (Remember the Maine!) was also based on a hoax.
Not to mention the numerous covert wars that they lied about. Iran-Contra, the overthrow of Mossadegh in Iran, Allende in Chile, Arbenz in Guatemala. Also the war in Panama, against someone who was on the payroll of the CIA. Cuba as well. The Bay of Pigs invasion was supported by the CIA, and the people who invaded were trained by the CIA in Guatemala.

As for 9/11 this is the origin of the plan:-

9/11 left many unaswered questions and they may remain that way forever. What we can do is rationally and logically piece together the events that led up to 9/11, the day of 9/11 and everything that's happened since and hope to make some sense of it all.
How did an amateur pilot fly a plane into the Pentagon's ground level floor without stalling the plane and without bottoming out and/or skidding along the lawn? Where was the wreckage from the plane? In photos, there were no fuselage, cockpit, engines, wings, or bodies. If the government really wanted to silence the conspiracy theorists, why not simply release the footage from the nearby hotel and gas station from which they seized the surveilance footage, instead of three or four blurry frames of film?
Where did the plane go that crashed in Pennsylvania? I remember watching the news and hearing them say that it hit the ground so hard that it embedded itself into the ground. Wouldn't the wings have snapped off and been left on the surface? Again, no wreckage!
Things just do not add up right...

There are perhaps some legitimate questions that can be raised about the 9/11 destruction of the World Trade Center. However, when someone says, is you do that there is"no proof to convince me that the planes alone caused the collapse", it is clear to me that there is a conspiracy by Republicans to spread these weird theories and pin them on Democrats . What I'm saying is, all of these so called "conspiracy theories" are nothing more than an attempt to smear Democrats by portraying them as paranoid schizophrenics.

The end of your "question" illustrates the problem exactly. If the conspiracy was something a little simpler like, there actually were planes but they weren't the ones that were supposedly hijacked but instead remotely controlled, I might believe it. All these cutter charges placed everywhere and perfectly timed and all are just too far-fetched and too complicated for the bungling government to pull off. Not to mention all the ridiculous hologram plane and steel vaporizing death ray talk that floated around early on.

The government could have crashed the planes (or even just used truck bombs) into a couple packed sport stadiums and people would have been just as cowed with much less complexity.

EDIT: There was a program on last night on the History Channel about 9/11 conspiracies.

It had people from Popular Mechanics trying their best to debunk 9/11 truthers through weak arguments and failed miserably.

What was so stocking is that after I watched this program, I found this link that says that the THE OWNERS OF POPULAR MECHANICS ARE ALSO JOINT OWNERS OF THE HISTORY CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was indeed a very biased program that didn't hit all the major arguments that the 9/11 truthers had to offer.

Conspiracy theorists are those guys are the outcast's of society, they never made cool friends in school or played sports, and though out live they kind of formed there own merry band of losers, to get attention. Why don't you know? The evidence is massive and overpowering, and the proof is completely and utterly skull-crushing in all major aspects. You even have video footage of the planes hitting the building. You have the testimony of the world's most expert demolition people. The proof has been provided. You're threshold for 'reasonable doubt' would have to be pretty flexible to not accept what obviously happened on 9/11 - planes were flown into buildings - and yet still blythely accept the suspcious death of the dinosaurs, which is so causaully dismissed as an 'extinction,' even though scientists keep changing thier stories. Why don't you just 'Follow the Money' on that one - it clearly leads to Big Oil. Sure, Big Oil may not have a time machine, /yet/, but with thier trillions of petroproffits over the next couple centuries, couldn't they plausibly get one? Consider this:

Why crash planes into the WTC if the plan is to really take them out with explosives? Let's examine that logic: the planes hit the WTC, sensational news story on all channels, practically everyone is watching and cameras are rolling. Now explosives take the towers down. Why not just blow them up to begin with? Fewer witnesses, less evidence to support a conspiracy. It wouldn't be unheard of, they tried to bomb the WTC just 9 years earlier in 1993. The fact is, the floors pancaking on top of each other caused the ejections that appear to be explosives going off.
